That is, elements of experience (behaviour, emotion, sensation, knowledge and meaning). That would normally be held together in awareness, are fragmented, dissociation or split apart in order to prevent the person from being overwhelmed. A helpful metaphor is to think of a car being driven with the brakes and the gas both fully on. A gentle easing off of both pedals is what brings the car under control...
