More often than not, people fail to get the proper tools to prepare their workbenches for any kind of emergency. Even though they can improvise and do with whatever they have at hand, it is always better to be equipped with the right tool for the right job!

Wire stripping tools, for instance, are a must-have for any toolbox. However, there are several tools that collectively fill the criteria for wire stripping. That is why, it is important to know about the different kinds of tools like wire stripper, cutter, crimpers, pliers, etc.

What is a wire stripper?

Typically, a wire stripper is a small handheld tool that helps separate the electric wires from the insulation outside.

As you know, electric wires are covered with a layer made typically from plastic or rubber-like polymers. Wire stripping tools help to remove all the layers of wire insulation from the wires.

Now, there are several tools that are used for wire stripping, few of them being- wire stripper and cutter, crimpers, etc.; each has uses for different purposes. So, let’s take a detailed look at wire strippers!

Types of wire strippers:

There are mostly two kinds of wire strippers available in the market: manual and automatic.

Manual:

A manual wire stripper looks like a scissor and has opposing blades. They also have a centre notch that facilitates cutting the insulation without the risk of cutting through the wire. The manual wire strippers can help make circular cuts around the insulation by slowly rotating them and applying pressure on the insulation.

Since the insulation is not joined with wire, it comes off quite easily. Some of these wire strippers come with different notch sizes to accommodate cutting wires of different sizes.

Automatic:

An automatic wire stripper is more efficient when it comes to stripping that insulation. It is designed in a way where it grips the wire at one end while simultaneously cutting the insulation from the other end.

Using it is pretty simple. All you have to do is place the wire at the cutting slot jaw which matches the conductor size, and press the handles together. If you are not familiar with these jobs, using an automatic wire cutter is probably better and safer for you!

Thus, these two are the basics when it comes to wire stripping tools. However, many people often confuse them with wire cutters.

So, what is the difference between wire strippers and cutters?

There are few distinct differences between wire stripper and cutter. While strippers are mostly used to remove insulators made from plastic, rubber polymers etc., cutters are used to cut wires made from copper, iron, steel, aluminium, etc.

While they both look like scissors and are used for cutting, their jobs are vastly different. Many cutters also come with insulated handles to prevent people from receiving electric shocks while cutting those wires.

Things to look for in a good wire stripper:

Buying a good wire stripper is not a difficult job. However, there are certain things you should be careful of. Firstly, check the blades and their position. Secondly, make sure that the stripper you get is suitable for the size of wire you want to cut. Lastly, check their functions because the wire strippers can vary from each other in terms of what they can do.

You can easily get a variety of affordable wire strippers from leading manufacturers online. Quality products will always make the job of wire cutting considerably easier.
