Treatment for sarcoma may vary depending on the location where it develops primarily. Sarcomas are cancerous growths that appear abnormally in the connective tissues of the body such as tendons, muscles, cartilage, bones, fat, nerves and blood vessels of the arms or legs.
As mentioned earlier, there are several kinds of sarcomas, but the two primary types are soft tissue sarcoma and osteosarcoma (or bone sarcoma). In 2014 alone, approximately 12,000 confirmed cases of soft tissue sarcoma were identified, and 3,000 bone sarcoma cases were diagnosed in the United States.
Treatment for sarcoma usually entails undergoing surgery to get rid of the tumor or by undergoing radiation therapy. Sometimes, though not in all cases, hormone therapy and chemotherapy are utilized.
Risk Factors
No apparent explanation exists as to what causes the sudden development of sarcomas, though some risk factors should be taken note of, and which usually makes it easy to identify someone that is prone to cancer:
• People with Paget’s disease (a bone disorder which causes the bones to enlarge and become enfeebled)
• Presence of a disorder in the genes like Li-Fraumeni syndrome, Gardner syndrome or retinoblastoma
• Exposure to radiation, possibly during the treatment of another type of cancer
• If it runs in the family, then there is every likelihood that members of the family may develop sarcoma
Symptoms
It is not always easy to spot soft tissue sarcomas because they can develop on any part of the body. But what is usually noticed as the first inkling that signifies the presence of soft tissue sarcomas is the appearance of a lump. The lump may be painless, but as it gets bigger, it begins to exert pressure on the muscles or nerves and makes you feel uncomfortable. Sometimes, difficulty in breathing is experienced. There are currently no tests that can be used to detect these cancerous growths before they start causing the noticeable symptoms.
Bone sarcoma shows some early signs of its presence in the following ways:
• Individual with osteosarcoma of the leg may start limping
• Occasional pain in the infected bone, which may become worse at night
• Swelling is usually experienced, and this follows after several weeks of the pain.
Teenagers and children are most susceptible to bone sarcoma. The active nature of children and teens may bring about swelling in the arms or legs and is usually mistaken for a sports injury or just growing pains. Thus, a clear case of osteosarcoma may go unnoticed if the children or young adults do not seek medical attention but are treated at home.
Treatment for Sarcoma
The treatment for sarcoma primarily depends on the type, location and how developed the cancer is. It also depends on whether it has metastasized or not. Surgery is the major procedure used to treat sarcomas. Occasionally, radiation may be used to shrivel the size of the malignant growth before surgery or used to kill off the vestiges of cancer after a surgical operation. It could even be used as the major treatment in cases where surgery is not an option.
