Don’t just stick to one, mix up serves of different spin and length.

Most times when playing ping pong, we just stick to a single serve but if order to defeat your opponent, you need to mix things up. This is because as the game goes on, your opponent gets familiar to your serve and this no longer pose a problem to him/her. Some examples of advanced serves includemedium-long, deep, short, down-the-line, pure spin, pure speed, etc. Serves to the elbow tend to be very effective, since the receiver must quickly decide to use a forehand or backhand and often doesn’t decide in time.

Always have a plan for attack.

Always have a third-ball attack when playing ping pong. If done effectively, this will confused your opponent because you are going to take him by surprise. This is where you serve, the receiver receives, and you pin one in for a winner. An example is a short backspin serve, followed by a long push, then a powerful loop. Though this should not be done regularly, try to make variations, don’t just do it again and again and again. It will give your opponent enough time to plan a defense.

When you have the chance, Attack!!

It is good when you start an attack, primarily on a long serve. When you allow your opponent to attack, you automatically become the defensive player and without proper experience you will lose the point because a drop shot can be given and when you go for it, you will be nailed with a smash as a return. So what does this tell you, always attack when you have the opportunity It has been proven that the player to open the offense most often usually wins point. Don’t ask me who proved it.

When receiving a serve, don’t keep your eyes on the ball, keep your eyes on your opponent’s paddle.

It’s clear right? Keep your eyes on your opponent’s paddle. If you have ever seen World Champion Jan-Ove Waldner play, you can see that he makes a quick glimpse at how high the ball is tossed, then watches back down to the racket. If you keep your eyes on the ball, the server will confuse you with his tricks. So when receiving a serve, keep those eyes on the paddle and watch carefully.

Your returns should vary when receiving.

This cannot be overemphasized. Always mix up things because it make you unpredictable and unpredictability in a game is always the key to success. Don’t just keep pushing, try mixing up loops, drives, pushes, chops, etc. This will not only provide an excellent variation but will also keep your opponent blank.

Choose your paddle wisely

When you want to start using a preferred paddle, you should start with medium-fast blade rather than starting with a fast one. This is because a medium-fast blade allows you to rely more on your personal technique than on equipment to get the ball over the net and it will also give you good control of your play. The most important thing here is that the paddle you choose provides a good feeling. As for beginners, try to get paddle with less spin and speed. You can check my best paddle review to help you make a good choice. Getting one with less spin and speed will help in returning spinny balls.

Cover all areas

I remember when I started as a beginner, I would always stay at one side of the table and my opponent will always use this as an advantage by placing the ball at the other side and I would then rush to get it but fail. What does this tell you? You should start at the center of the table and develop side-to-side footwork. But this doesn’t guarantee you optimum success when you don’t know how to use your backhand. Work on it so that your opponent won't know what hit him/her when you blast him/her with that backhand smash! Players who do exceptionally well are always two-winged, or being able to attack almost equally well on both hands.

Don’t be shy! Experiment Stuff.

Try and find some cool serves you could experiment with.  Examples include a high, heavy backspin serve that bounces on your side near the net, on the opponent's side near the net, and goes back over to your side or one that bounces fast at the edge of your opponent’s side. I can keep on going because there’s lot of good stuff to try out. Not only is this going to be a lot of fun but also helps your development when you master them. Then you will be truly unpredictable when you start dishing out random serves leaving your opponent bewildered.

Be Calm always

Learning to be the best also requires you to control your temper. When you are losing in a match, or have missed several shots in a row, don't get mad, instead be calm. When you get mad, you will eventually lose the game because you will lose concentration. Instead ask yourself why you are losing and what needs to be done in order to stop these plague. If what you tried doesn’t work, try it again until you get it. You can also call for a timeout. Use this time to chill and get your head back in the game. Until a match is over, you should never give up. I have seen lots of scenarios when a player is been beaten 10 – 3 and he/she gets back and win the game, so don’t give up.
