Squamous cell sarcoma, also known as squamous cell carcinoma, is a type of cancer that commonly develops on the protective layer of surface tissue (referred to as the epithelial layer of the skin) or the mucous membranes of the human body. It mostly appears on the skin, looking crusty or scaly, and the base is inflamed and looks red. It is considered to be one of the major types of skin cancer (actually, it is the second most widespread type of skin cancer). Sites, where squamous cell sarcoma may occur, include the cervix, vagina, anus, head, prostate, urinary bladder, esophagus, neck and lung.

Repeated exposure to strong and direct sunlight without adequate protection using externally applied medications intensifies the risk of having squamous cell sarcoma.
