Where to rent a car in Morocco

If you plan to visit Northern Africa, Morocco in particular, then you may also want to consider a cheap Morocco car rental for your trip. While it’s true you can discover this country by bus or taxi, it is far more comfortable to ride on your own terms and your own agenda. Let’s start off by saying that the best rent car deals in Morocco are at the airport. The reason? Intense competition which continuously pushes the prices down for consumers. Most major airports will have international brands like Budget, Hertz and Avis as well as some local car rental companies as well.

It’s good to point out in the beginning that driving in Morocco will certainly test your nerves but being able to whip around the country as you like is worth it. If you want to rent a car from the city, main tourist areas like Tangier, Marrakech, Essaouira, Rabat, Casablanca and Agadir have plenty of car hire companies to choose from.

Driving in Morocco: parking and other tips

Road conditions in Morocco are quite reasonable and mostly paved although if you head out far enough you will encounter plenty of dirt and gravel roads as well. In the country’s main cities, including Casablanca, Rabat, Tangier, Marrakech and Fez, are well connected by an efficient system of roads which also includes paying a toll to use. Parking in Moroccan cities should be thought out carefully. Always park your rent car in a guarded lot, many of which are owned by hotels or resorts.

Hunting for a cheap car hire Morocco city? You may want to pay attention to the rules of the road while you’re at it. For light vehicles in urban centres the speed limit is 40km/h. On long-distance roads the limit is 90-100km/h and 120km/h on motorways. Be careful on rainy days however when speed limits are drastically lower. There is zero alcohol tolerance when driving.

Road trips in Morocco: what to do, what to see

Casablanca

We have one piece of advice for travellers visiting Casablanca with a Morocco car hire: avoid the city centre during rush hour at all costs. It’s much better to park your car outside the city centre in a guarded parking lot and wander in on foot. The beautiful beaches, tempting medina… you’ll discover that Casablanca is a sparkling and dynamic city on first sight. While little remains from Humphrey Bogart’s days apparently the cafe still stands.

Marrakech

This city could easily compete for the title of entertainment capital of Africa. As the second biggest Moroccan city in terms of population and economic growth, Marrakech is chaotic and crazy. Better to leave your economy Morocco car hire on the outskirts and reply on public transportation or taxi. You could spend days exploring the souks and old medina ruins. At night, Djeema El Fna is not to be missed when street performers come out to play.

Agadir

If you’re on holidays in Morocco and want to head to some spectacular beaches, then Agadir is your place. While the city itself is a fine example of modern Morocco, you won’t find the historic heritage here like in other coastal towns and cities. Also popular here is surfing. The best times of the year to surf are between November and March but you can rent surf equipment and join surfing classes year-round.
