Follicular unit extraction (FUE) is also known as the follicular transfer (FT) is one of two primary techniques of hair transplant for obtaining hair follicles that contain the hair roots, naturally occurring group of 1-4 hairs, for hair transplant. Follicular unit extraction is firstly introduced by Masumi Inaba in Japan in 1988 who described the use of the needle in about 1-mm for extracting the follicular units.

Follicular unit extraction (FUE) is defined by the extraction of follicular units with the activity of punching for extracting the follicular units at a time from the safer donor area with the help of the needle is performed. Each unit may contain between 1-4 hairs. The punches vary in size because it won’t be good if the punching will occur very nearly from another punch and may be the cause of the damage rate of hair roots. The punches size varies between 0.7 mm to 1 mm and now it is the turn of your graft dissection carefully with the help of forceps. Once the graft has been extracted there is a small hole in the scalp that is hard to see and takes roughly 7-8 days to complete healing. After having the dissected grafts that we get from the scalp’s donor area now becoming ready to implant. The surgeon holds the dissected grafts carefully and implants them on the balding portion to cover them with viable and strong hair roots that take almost 9-10 months to give a proper look with a re-grown hair.

It is very important to assess the recipient’s situation and grade of balding so that it will be pre-defined that which technique would be better for the patient. Each technique of the hair transplant has their own role and results, but it also depends on the individual personal needs and wishes that for which technique they want to go for!

Both the FUT and FUE technique of hair transplant have their own implications and the surgeon performs the technique as per the need and wishes of the individual. In the procedure of follicular unit extraction (FUE) and follicular unit transplant (FUT) the steps of implanting and dissecting and selecting the donor’s zone are same and the only differences are there in the process of extraction the grafts from the scalp.

Now it is very important to give the punch to extract the follicular units for the implantation and the method of punching that surgeons use is of three main types namely; Manual Punch, Motorized & Robotic FUE.

The methods of extracting the grafts are jot down below:-

Manual Punch: The punch is manually rotated by hand and makes a circular incision for extracting the leaves very normal hole that is invisible and after healing the wound it is very rarely seen because re-grown hair already takes the space to hide the extracted zone of grafts. It is resistant to overheating as there are no moving parts and all operated by the surgeon and can give the best results in terms of the number of grafts and scar less appearance if the surgeon is well-versed in doing so.

Motorized Punch: It is a mechanical and electrical punching apparatus that contains a hand-held the motorized device that rotates faster than the manual punch and can harvest more numbers of grafts at a higher ratio. There is the chance of overheating and inability to feel when the punch had dulled can occur. You can allow more numbers of grafts in a single sitting, by the use of motorized punch, but has the more oscillations/turns effect that is usually not needed in the procedure.

Robotic FUE: The Artas Robotic system has the ability to plan an extraction pattern of graft via computer by the operator and is the most modern technique of extracting the grafts in FUE which is completely unassisted in the punching process. We can define the depth, angle and direction of the grafts and can get an entirely random extraction pattern. There is a very low transition, but results are still rare due to its infancy.

Now let’s have a look at the comparison of Follicular unit extraction (FUE) and follicular unit transplant (FUT) in terms of their pros & cons are mentioned below:-

Recovery period: Follicular unit extraction (FUE) technique has a quicker recovery time and significantly lowest possible discomfort rather than the Follicular unit transplant (FUT).

A strong alternative for hair transplant: FUE is taken as a strong alternative for hair transplant in place of FUT when the patient’s scalp is not suitable for strip harvesting due to tightness and stiffness.

The Harvesting area is eight times greater: It is estimated that follicular unit extraction (FUE) process involves the eight times greater harvesting donor’s zone in comparison to FUT of the traditional strip excision method.
