Bladder cancer is a medical condition that is more common in women than in men. New cases of bladder cancer are reported every year. Researchers believed that smoking and exposure to some industrial chemicals or cosmetic chemicals, such as waving beauty products might be a contributing factor to the early stage of bladder cancer. Bladder cancer cases are higher in industrialized countries, but it is lowest in South American and some Asian countries.

Signs of possible bladder cancer include blood in the urine, pain when urinating and having a frequent urge to urinate but experiencing no results when attempting to do so. Of course, these signs are not limited to bladder cancer. Nonetheless, they definitely should be checked out by a qualified doctor quickly.

Often, we tend to think of smoking as being connected with lung cancer, but medical professionals feel that there is a definite connection between smoking and bladder cancer. It has been reported that the vast majority of cases of bladder cancer are caused by cigarette smoking. It has also been reported that there is a definite connection between bladder cancer and the use of artificial sweeteners.

Early stage bladder cancer is characterized by cancerous cells which are contained within the bladder lining where the tumor is still small, and there has not being any affected regional organs. At an early stage (or zero stage), the survival rate is very high at around 80 - 90%. But the survival rate drop at stage I. this is the stage that the tumor begins to show signs of metastasis (spread) to other tissues. Nonetheless, the survival rate is still high at around 70 - 80% if treated early before it moves to stage II.

Most bladder cancers cases are treatable because they grow on the surface of the wall, which makes them readily removed with surgery. However, a more aggressive radical procedure is required if cancer has grown into the bladder structure and other organs.

In some advanced cases, there might be the need to remove the bladder and sometimes other organs as well. To do this, doctors may use a small section of the bowel to construct another functional bladder. Besides, radiation and chemotherapy may be applied. However, if early stage bladder cancer is not detected and treated quickly and it is allowed to spread to the bone, the patients may not live more than a year after diagnosis.
